We had a real, real tough time, we have some deficits, but we managed to get through it all, and we had some very, very good programs. I, as a matter of fact, I'm the one who hired Nigel Redden I think in 1986 is about when we hired Nigel and Nigel helped us tremendously. He had a very wonderful knack at helping for fundraising. So, uh, hey, uh... He was just very, very good. Beside his artistic abilities, his fundraising ability, he knew where, he knew the people that we needed to go to and with the various foundations. And as you know, Nigel had been head of the dance program at the NEA prior to coming to Spoleto. And so he had a lot of contacts and we used those contacts to raise money. And I'm happy to say that, you know, we've gotten pretty good financial shape. And it was the second time when Menotti got rid of Nigel that we brought him, Menotti brought in Marcus Overton, and then that didn't work out. Gian Carlo, he didn't feel that the festival, the board of directors raised enough money. He'd have the first floor. and I'd have the second floor and my family and I, we would go to Spoleto and I guess I had a very, very cordial relationship with Gian Carlo. As a matter of fact, for the christening of Chip and Melinda's first child, Mary Ellen and I went to the Rockefeller estate at the Poconos, Pocono Hills, New York, for the christening of that child. We had a very good relationship, but as I say, Menotti just couldn't stand to have peace and quiet. I had Menotti wanting to do more and more opera, and more and expensive opera, and then you know, Menottii didn't care for jazz at all. To my knowledge, Menotti never went to a jazz performance in all of his years at Spoleto. He certainly never went to the finale, I don't think, at the Middleton Place. It was a fine line. Baryshnikov agreed to come, and we sold out in a hurry. So I told Joel Smith, I said, Joel, I'm paying you, we are paying you about $38,000 a day in interest and I'm very interested in and involved with the Spoleto Festival and we need a new piano. And I said, what we really want is a Steinway Hamburg, Germany, piano. And Joel said, fine, we'll buy it for you. I said that's good. Then Carlos took Joel aside and said, Joel, do you have any idea how much that piano's going to cost? And Joel says, no, I don't know, a couple thousand dollars. He said, $65,000. So Joel kept his word.
